Legal

Open Otus is a music player that can talk to the Soulseek network. The software itself is lawful. What you choose to put in a shared folder is your responsibility.

The software

A player that connects to a network is ordinary software, in the same way that a web browser or an email client is ordinary software. Open Otus hosts no files, indexes nobody's collection and runs no server that your downloads pass through. Files move directly from one person's computer to another.

What you share is your call

You decide which folders other people can browse. Anything inside a shared folder is visible to everyone on the network, so only put things there that you have the right to pass on. That covers work such as:

  • Music you recorded or produced yourself.
  • Public domain recordings.
  • Creative Commons and netlabel releases.
  • Work by unsigned and independent artists who want it shared.
  • Live sets and demos an artist has passed on freely.

Commercial releases you do not hold the rights to are not yours to share, and neither is anything you were licensed to listen to rather than to distribute. Soulseek's own rules say the same thing, and Open Otus repeats that rule without softening it.

Soulseek

Soulseek has run openly since 2001 and is operated by Soulseek LLC, a registered US company with a published copyright takedown process. Soulseek® is a trademark of Soulseek LLC. Open Otus is an independent client and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by Soulseek LLC.

Licence

Open Otus is free software. There is no licence key, no paid tier and nothing to buy. slskd, the Soulseek daemon that the app talks to, is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and runs as a separate process that you fetch yourself. It is not shipped inside Open Otus.

No warranty

Open Otus is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. It is beta software and it will have bugs. You use it at your own risk, and backing up your music and your library database is down to you.

Reporting a problem

If you think something on this website infringes your rights, tell us and we will look at it. We cannot remove a file from the Soulseek network, because we host nothing and have no control over what other people put in their shared folders. Requests about material on the network itself should go to Soulseek LLC through their published process.

A contact address for legal requests will be listed here shortly, while the beta is being set up.
